The Carroll County Coalition of the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project

Welcomes Your Participation

In a Public Meeting on February 15, 2020 (snow date: 2/22) at the Westminster Library

Between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of World War II, more than 4,000 black Americans were victims of racial terror lynchings in the United States*. No fewer than 40 of these crimes were committed in Maryland, including at least one in Carroll County, noted at the Memorial to Peace & Justice in Montgomery Alabama:

We will discuss the importance of acknowledging the history of racial terrorism in Carroll County; pay respect to lynching victim, Townsend Cook; and explore ideas for community remembrance projects in Carroll County as a way to begin the process of healing and reconciliation.

The meeting will open with brief comments from selected speakers and a screening of a short film, followed by questions and discussion.  Please come to the Westminster Library at 2 pm on February 15 to learn more.
